I'm working on some new posts about one little word and other crafting adventures. This year I'm doing scripture Sunday a bit different. To start I'm sharing my sermon doodles from a Christmas Eve sermon. The pastor started by saying there would be five points, just like a star. I love how each point of the star was a point of the message and at the end the five points work together the spell "peace." It was an awesome sermon and this visual is something that helps me remember these questions and ideas. Hoping to start this week back to school with a bit of wonder, peace and inspiration!

On Christmas Eve the message was about light. God's message and love are like a light that must be passed along, just as we pass along the Olympic torch or the candle flame during silent night. I loved this illustration as it highlighted that we are the messengers. We do not need to come up with content to share, just find opportunities to pass along the message we've already received. But to make this work, we must bear the light ourselves. We must keep the flame going and if it ever gets low, return back to God that he might rekindle the fire of His love.

So for my last scripture sunday, I choose this verse from Job. To put it simply, Job has a rough life. This is towards the end when Elihu is reminding Job that God is always faithful. He is speaking to Job and telling him to give credit to God the almighty and to be quiet and listen for God's guidance; to be lighted with the light of life.

I was visiting my in-laws this Christmas and it was fun to have new traditions and music on Christmas Eve. I was pleasantly surprised at how I was able to enjoy the moments and not dwell on what I was missing out on. Then the lights dimmed, Silent Night began and one by one the candle light spread. I was suddenly overcome with emotion and reminded of my Grandmother who always knew the lyrics to Christmas carols and had this look of pure joy when she sang Silent Night. I decided to just receive the flame and listen as the church sang that night and it was beautiful. It is rare that I opt out of an opportunity to sing, but I'm glad I chose to be quiet and bask in the moment.

I have really enjoyed this little word on mine; be. It is tiny but powerful. It was a call to action and it led me to so many wonderful bible verses. Not sure what my 2016 word will be however I know I will go back to these verses again and again and BEinspired to live with the light of life.

This morning a man was baptized at church. This is awesome. What made it especially moving though was his personal story. He is in his 90s. He needed support to stand and get to the fount. His wife has been a member for years, lifting him in prayer and caring for him. She is the woman who sends cards of love and kindness and is constantly looking to help those around her. Today as I watched her walk alongside him as he dedicated his life to Jesus I was touched. And then heart was broken for those who don't know God and for the loved ones around them who struggle with what to do and say. As my heart broke, God immediately filled my heart with gratitude, love and inspiration to keep looking for opportunities to reflect his love. I'm glad for that man and his family, I'm glad that we worship a God who has grace and mercy on us, and I'm glad I was open to seeing the many ways God used that moment to reach out to us all.

I love the last line of this verse- the idea of living carefree, without worry or anxiety because God is protective and careful with us. I hadn't thought about the tension between being contentment and worry. To worry is to think there is something you don't have or can't have, to always be looking around and guessing what might happen. Contentment comes from a place of trust and rest in the power and guidance of God, relying on him to strengthen us.

As I enter back into work this week I want to focus on feeling confident in the gifts he has given me, confidence that his plan is greater than any other plan, and remember that he is careful with me, knowing best what my heart soul and body need. #becontent #becarefree

A fun result of this project is that others are finding "be" verses and sending them on to me! I never thought of this as a community experience other than me sharing and I am LOVING it! It is so fun to see how others are inspired by my quest but also, how their words really speak to me. Thanks for this one Hannah! This makes me think of you and to be ready for adventure!

One Little Word Wednesday

I forgot to bring colored pencils with me on our trip to the ocean. Though I love the power of black and white, I decided this one could use a little color for added emphasis. So I took a photo of my page and converted it to balk and white.

Then I imported the photo in an app on my iPad called Annotate+. It has highlighting tools, text, etc. that I've previously used to annotate PDFs. I used the highlighters to trace over certain parts and here's what I ended up with.

Kind of a fun way to add color without committing. I might leave the page black and white for now but I love that I have some options.

This is my scripture verse for the week and it seemed appropriate as I sat on the beach listening to the powerful roar of the waves.

Getting ready for camping and hiking and maximizing outdoor time. This felt like an appropriate verse to remind me to be present in the moment and admire the amazing creation of God.
